Philly, the city of brotherly love, was next on the itinerary. It was time to set aside our ongoing man vs city, 20-plus year rivalry for the good of the music. We pulled into town a few hours before we had to head out to the show which was the perfect amount of time to grab some legit cheesesteaks, which you know... had to happen. Thankfully our good friends, Lori and Zane, had us covered. They put us up and fed us cheesesteaks??? My bitterness towards this city was already melting away like cheese wiz in the middle of a sandwich filled with hot beef.
Time to head to the gig. This one was at The Grape Room which was located in Manayunk, a neighborhood in Northwest Philly. From everything we had heard and observed, this was a really cool neighborhood filled with young professionals. When we first set foot in The Grape Room we heard Austin native, Keelan Donovan, playing an acoustic solo set. He was great. We couldn’t believe we were on the same bill as another Austin artist way up in Philly. Wolf Accent took the stage next. They were an acoustic duo with intricate acoustic guitar parts combined with rowdy vocals. They were fun. Then, The Chordaes, took the stage. They had come down from their hometown in NYC for this set. They were great. They were onto a really groove-heavy, but somewhat laid back rock sound complete with big 3-4 part vocals. By the time we took the stage we were more than happy to rock some faces! We ripped through a 40 minute set to close the night and definitely connected with some really cool people after the set. We had a great time this night and we can’t wait to come back.
The next morning, we were faced with a decision… do we sleep in.. or do we wake up early and check out some of the historical landmarks in downtown Philly with our gracious host and wonderful guide, Lori? Well, to be totally cliche, we can sleep when we’re dead right? Lori took us downtown and we checked out the Liberty Bell, Independence Hall, the US Mint, the Rocky statue, ol’ Benny Franklin’s grave, etc. It felt good to do the tourist thing since it had been so long since I’d been there. This was Joe and Brett’s first visit to Philly, so it was even cooler for them. Alright, time to head to the big apple!!
